 FAQs

  • Our innovative integration of Pilates exercises and equipment sets us apart from other pelvic floor therapy practices.

Many pelvic health conditions, such as urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, diastasis recti, and hernias, involve a mismanagement of intra-abdominal pressure control. This control is crucial in moderating pressures throughout the torso to prevent excessive force on any particular area. Overloading specific regions like the abdominal wall, groin, or pelvic floor can lead to further tissue weakening over time.

By incorporating Pilates exercises and equipment into pelvic health treatment, we enable a safe and gradual progression of intra-abdominal pressure increases. This ensures that you don't take one step forward only to experience two steps back with your symptoms. The steady progress facilitated by Pilates exercises actually allows for quicker improvement in your condition.

Not just that, Pilates exercises are dynamic, much like how we move in our daily lives. This ensures you are able to get back to the activities you love with greater ease and confidence.

Additionally, Evolve Pelvic Health & Wellness offers a safe space and treatment approach to maximize your comfort when managing situations of trauma, abuse and embarrassing conditions. We want you to feel empowered to get the help that you deserve!

  • The pelvic floor physical therapy evaluation consists of a comprehensive assessment of your pelvic floor muscles, as well as other related areas such as the lower back and hips. Here are some of the things you can expect during a typical pelvic floor physical therapy evaluation:

    1. Medical History: We will start by taking a thorough medical history, which may include questions about any pain, discomfort, or problems you may be experiencing in your pelvic area, bladder, or bowels.

    2. Physical Examination: We will perform a physical examination of your pelvic floor muscles, which may include an external and/or internal examination, depending on your symptoms and medical history. Your therapist will use gloves and lubricant during the internal examination to assess the strength, tone, and flexibility of your pelvic floor muscles.

    3. Muscle Function: We will evaluate the function of your pelvic floor muscles, including your ability to contract and relax them voluntarily, and your ability to coordinate these muscles with other muscles in your lower body, such as your abdominal and back muscles.

    4. Posture and Alignment: We will assess your posture and alignment, and may evaluate the movement patterns of your hips and lower back to determine if any imbalances or weaknesses may be contributing to your pelvic floor dysfunction.

    5. Breathing: We may evaluate your breathing patterns, as the way you breathe can impact the function of your pelvic floor muscles.

    6. Education and Recommendations: Based on the results of your evaluation, we will provide education and recommendations for treatment, which may include exercises to strengthen or relax your pelvic floor muscles, postural and alignment corrections, breathing techniques, and other strategies to improve your pelvic floor function and reduce symptoms.

  • The number of pelvic health physical therapy visits needed depends on factors such as the severity of the condition, overall health, and treatment response. In a traditional physical therapy setting, the treatment plan may consist of several sessions over weeks or months. However, the beauty of fee-for-service physical therapy is that insurance companies do not dictate how often or how many visits you have. Instead, this model offers more flexibility to create an individualized plan of care that best suits the patient's needs. This approach can result in a faster recovery with fewer required visits. The frequency and duration of visits will be discussed at the end of your first visit. Some patients may only require 1-2 visits, while others may need to come in once a month or 1-2 times per week for 4-6 weeks. We also offer package pricing to reduce the cost of therapy, which can be a great option for those who need multiple visits.

  • Absolutely. We understand that undergoing an internal pelvic exam can be a sensitive and uncomfortable experience for some people. At the beginning of your evaluation, we will explain how the external and internal pelvic floor exam works using a pelvic floor skeletal model. While this exam can help identify the root cause of your condition and lead to an effective treatment plan, your comfort and safety are our top priority. If you feel uncomfortable with the internal or external pelvic floor exam, you are welcome to decline it. We will work with you to create a personalized plan of care that respects your boundaries and addresses your needs. If you do decide to undergo the exam, we will require verbal and written consent to ensure that you fully understand the procedure and feel comfortable moving forward.

  • Cancelling your appointment is unnecessary. Our appointments can help alleviate period-related symptoms, but a heavy flow may limit internal manual therapy techniques. Despite this there are plenty of treatment options available to ensure you’re still working towards your therapy goals.

  • To ensure maximum comfort and ease of movement during your physical therapy session, it's recommended that you wear comfortable clothing that isn't too baggy. Since part of your session may involve therapeutic exercises, it's important to wear clothing that allows your physical therapist to observe your body's movements and alignment. Additionally, please note that shoes must be removed before entering the equipment area, so it's a good idea to bring socks to your appointment. For Pilates sessions, many people prefer to wear yoga pants, athletic shorts, and tank tops or t-shirts.

  • A physical therapy superbill is a document that provides a detailed list of the services or procedures performed during a physical therapy session, along with their corresponding costs. It is essentially an itemized receipt that can be used for insurance reimbursement. We are happy to provide a superbill on request at the end of your visit.

  • If you do not have insurance or are not using insurance, you have the right to request a good faith estimate of medical expenses from your medical provider to be provided no later than 1 business day after scheduling. This is an estimate of the cost of services expected at the time you schedule. If you receive a bill $400 or more than your estimate, then you have the right to dispute the bill. At Evolve Pelvic Health & Wellness, we offer transparency with our pricing. You will only be charged at the time of service and won’t be billed afterwards.
